Mc escher lizard tessellation6/20/2023 ![]() ![]() The whole artwork is monochromatic, consisting of mainly black, white and different shades of grey. ![]() The transition of 2-dimensional to 3-dimensional creates optical illusion in the viewers as the reptiles seem to be growing out of the page, turning from a picture to a living thing. The reptiles are the sides of the page are half 2-dimensional and half 3-dimensional as they are a the point of transition. The cycle then repeats itself as the reptile at the far right end of the tessellation emerges out again this creates a sense of repetition. The cycle ends when the first reptile in the line crawls onto the page of tessellation and flattens to become 2-dimensional and merge into the tessellation again. The cycle starts as the 2-dimensional reptiles in the tessellation crawls out of the page of the book and become 3-dimensional in its form, depicted by the use of shadows and addition of textures. The reptiles emerged from the page seem to be crawling in a circular motion, creating a sense of movement as they crawl from the page to a book and then onto the set square, from which they reach the highest point of their journey, the dodecahedron, and breathes out a breath of white smoke. The 2-dimensional reptiles depicted in the page of the open book are most likely lizards while the ones which crawled out of the page are likely crocodiles (I personally think that they are crocodiles…though many people say that they are still lizards) due to the presence of rough skin texture on their bodies. It depicts reptiles crawling out of a tessellation on a page of an open book in a circular motion. This is a very well balanced piece of work. This artwork, “Reptiles”, is done by M.C. ![]()
